Trimmed the first panel to match the chines and ensured all excess glue etc was removed along the centreline, then notched the panel at frame two and near the bow on the centreline to allow the mating panels to wrap over.
Having done the first panel the second went much quicker. Measured, cut, scarfed and glued it up on Fri night before the Olympic opening ceremony started, then steamed sat morning and glued it down sat afternoon between the road race coverage, ( really frustrating - wish I hadn't watched it) I've been putting this job off, but came back from '300 sailing early today as I just couldn't keep up with the others in the strong breeze - great sail though. I cut some ply 'washers' to use to clamp the panel along the girder and dug out the wallpaper steamer to soften the panel Turned out to be really straightforward. I'm pleased I took the trouble to steam it as this is quite a curvature. Next stage will be to mark the panel, remove it and trim it some more before co-opting some helpers to glue it down.
Back from 10 days cycle touring in Brittany, great while the sun shined, before the wind, rain and aches. I've been puting of scarfing the bottom panels, but tonight just got on with it and it was pretty straightforward. I started with a powerplane but then sharpened my hand plane and found it much easier with much more control. The stripes as you cut through the veneer layers make it easy to guide the material removal Running out of room to layout the panels for glueing. I'd be in trouble if the Farr was 14' !
Made a couple of card templates for the bottom and chine panels, then spent some time jiggling them around the ply sheets to ensure I have enough material for them all. It is going to be a squeeze and I need to make sure I leave enough for the inner side tanks.
Then marked and cut the first two panels, gulp!. I tried a quick trial fit and it is going to be a tight bend to fit the bottom panel around the bow, so I think I'll have to work out a way of steaming these Next step is to scarf these first two pieces together. Need a bit more time before I have a go at that. |
